James Cleary, MD, PhD, is a medical oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who specializes in treating gastrointestinal cancers. After graduating from Rutgers College and Albert Einstein Medical School, he completed an internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a medical oncology fellowship at Dana-Farber.

During his fellowship, he became interested in research that focused on the identification and development of novel therapeutic approaches for gastrointestinal malignancies. Today, he collaborates on translational research projects with basic science laboratories and is the principal investigator on clinical trials evaluating targeted and immune-directed therapies. He serves as the Director of Clinical Trials in the Center for Gastrointestinal Oncology at Dana-Farber. His research is funded by grants from Stand Up To Cancer and the National Cancer Institute. In addition, he has won awards for patient care at Dana-Farber and teaching at Harvard Medical School.
